Full Description
A possible ring ditch or rectilinear enclosure of unknown date is visible as a cropmark on aerial photographs, approximately 350 metres to the east of the site of Brightwell Hall, centred on circa TM255434, Brightwell parish. The ditch is circa 1 metre wide and the enclosure is between 16 and 18 metres across. The enclosure is not perfectly circular, rather is slightly flattened on 4 sides, giving it a sub-square appearance orientated at approximately 45 degrees from the horizontal. A linear cropmark can be seen about 10 metres to the south-east of the enclosure sharing this alignment. It is possible both enclosure and linear cropmark are of medieval or post-medieval date, the former resembling a stack stand ditch, the latter a field boundary. (S1)
