Full Description
A series of earthwork banks of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs to the east of Martlesham village, centred approximately on TM256463, Martlesham parish. The banks are visible following the felling of the plantation visible on aerial photographs of the 1940s (S1). They are largely arranged on an east-west axis, although the shorter, northernmost are slightly curvilinear in form. They do not show an obvious relationship with the pattern of tree planting as visible on S1, but no such boundaries are marked on First or Second Edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904, surveyed prior to the establishment of the plantation. It is possible, but unlikely, that they may be boundary markers of much earlier date, possibly associated with the cropmark complex to the east (MRM 026).
