Full Description
Possible ditched field boundaries of medieval or post-medieval date are visible on aerial photographs as cropmarks and soilmarks centred on circa TM 342883, to the north-east of Manor Farm, Bungay parish. A curvilinear soilmark circa 140 metres in length clearly follows the former path of a grubbed up section of field boundary which continued from a boundary still marked on the Second edition Ordnance Survey map of circa 1904 (S2). However, the soilmark is up to 12 metres wide in places, and even accounting for the dragging effect of modern ploughing, this appears too wide for a simple hedgerow bank. It is possible that a road or track marked on Hodskinson's map of circa 1783 followed this route before the insertion of the straight road between Manor Farm and St John's Road to the north-east. There is no evidence of a route below this point however. The possible field boundaries or enclosure to the east of this point may be of a different, and possibly later date. (S1, S2)
