Full Description

Possible field boundaries and quarry pits of probable post-medieval date are visible as cropmarks on aerial photographs centred on circa TM379902, to the east of Manor Farm, Shipmeadow parish. Neither boundary or possible extractive pits are marked on the First or Second Edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904 (S1, S2) but a probable quarry is marked immediately to the north on the Second Edition Ordnance Survey; it probably remains extant but obscured from view by dense vegetation. The presence of such a pit of probable late nineteenth century date nearby adds credence to the interpretation of the cropmarks recorded here as features of similar date and function. (S3)
