Description

Excavation was undertaken on the site of St Saviour's Hospital in advance of the redevelopment of the site by Tesco Stores Ltd. The excavation work was carried out in three stages, i) from April to October 1989, ii) February 1990 and iii) October 1994. Monitoring work during the renovation of the Chapel took place in 1996, this uncovered an additional flint wall and a number of finds. The development area covered c.12000sqm and trial trenching pinpointed approx 1250sqm along the western edge of the site for excavation, showing that the remainder of the site had been either a medieval pond or had been destroyed since. The site lies within the precinct of the medieval hospital of St. Saviours and documentary evidnece suggests that the area covered by the hospital was large, containing many buildings as well as gardens and ponds. All that remains above ground of the hospital is the west end, with a blocked door and window fronting onto Fornham Road. These remains are a SAM no. 26. 1989-1990: 9 trenches were excavated to pinpoint excavation. 1994: An area c.14mx18m was stripped and excavated (S1).
