Site Event/Activity record ESF19270 - Monitoring - Cockerells Hall, Rattlesden Road, Buxhall

Continuous archaeological monitoring of small area of groundworks at moated site ahead of the construction of a swimming pool. The site area lies near to the anticipated northwest corner of the original medieval moat (now partially filled in). The outcome of the monitoring indicates that the excavated area actually avoided the original line of the moat. No archaeological features or finds were located. The topsoil was of pale-mid brown loamy clay which was fairly compacted and ranged in depth from 0.2-0.4m. Below the topsoil was a subsoil which was around 0.5m deep consisting of mixed pale orange-brown clay with occasional small chalk lumps, but otherwise very few inclusions. A second subsoil was located blow this with a depth of up to 0.2m and was of very compact pale brown clay with fine chalk fragments and occasional patches of orange sand. Natural underlying clay was reached at a depth of 0.9-1.1m below the old existing surface level and consisted of heavy pale grey chalky clay (S1).
