Description
An archaeological monitoring was carried out at the New Cartlodge, The Chantry, Church lane, Brundish. A shallow trench for a building slab c.5m by 5m, of between 200mm and 450mm depth. This revealed c.300mm of mixed topsoil, containing hardcore (brick/tile), slate, charcoal, chalk, mortar and coal fragments; all of probable post-medieval or early modern date (19th – early 20th century). Below this was stiff natural clay with chalk flecks and sandy pockets. Despite the site being within a moated enclosure of likely medieval date, no evidence for earlier occupation or site use was detected (S1).
