Site Event/Activity record ESF20242 - Monitoring - 39A St Johns Street, Bury St Edmunds

Monitoring of trenches associated with the conversion of 39A St Johns Street into flats. The site was visited on 3 occassions during 2007. A new service trenche running most of the length of the property provided a section c1.1m deep and 0.35m wide over most of the length of the property. A new manhole was seen for the main service trench and the spoil from the footings. 19th century or later finds were seen. A further 5m trench was seen, the upper fill was disturbed ground that directly overlay orange sand. This was cut by several steep sided pits containing finds 19th century or alter. Most of the footings were seen, which contained natural orange sand. The Baulk on the south side of the site was exposed revealing a section 1.45m deep of which 0.75m was natural sand, the remainder dark loam mixed with building debris including 19th century bricks. A number of pits were identified in the garden of this property but all could be dated to the 19th century or later. The topsoil appeared to be truncated and there was no evidence for any earlier occupation of the site (S1).
