Site Event/Activity record ESF20514 - Monitoring - 2 Chequer Square, Bury St Edmunds

Archaeological monitoring was carried out during the construction of a conservatory and internal refurbishment works. Several visits were made to the site. The brick floor of an internal cellar, which covered most of the building, was lifted and the soil examined. The bricks had been laid on clean subsoil of degraded chalk, which was c.2.5m deep. Ground exposed behind the walls of the cellar was disturbed, probably by a cellar construction trench. No further work was carried out within the building. A concrete slab was removed within the garden, which exposed a possible 18th or 19th century pit cesspit was identified. No further archaeological finds or features were identified. Further construction work was not monitored as it was demonstrated that any early archaeological levels were beneath the level of disturbance (S1).
