Description
The previously overgrown site had been cleared and levelled before a single trench, 15m in length, was mechanically excavated using a tracked excavator fitted with a ditching bucket. The topsoil consisted of a loose, mid brown humic sand, up to 0.4m thick at the northern end of the trench, shallowing out to just 0.1m thick at the south. This relates to a gentle NNW-SSE slope on the site. The topsoil sealed a compact, coarse orange natural sand mottled with regular patches of black mineral staining, characteristic of heathland soils. No archaeological features were identified within the trench and no artefacts were recovered from the spoil.
