Description
Archaeological Evaluation followed by monitoring was carried out for groundworks associated with the proposed new habitat creation. Despite the high potential for archaeological remains of prehistoric date, the evaluation and monitoring only revealed a pit and ditch. These features were both shallow and located in the area of deeper subsoil which suggests that if any features were present elsewhere they may have been lost to ploughing. Trenches 3 and 4 were located close to the possible barrows to investigate whether there were adjacent burials or cremations. Neither trench contained archaeological features or finds. Topsoil was present across the whole site 0.32-0.48m thick, subsoil was present only in the centre of Trench 1 c0.35m thick. The natural deposits comprised compact while chalk with patches of dark-mid brown orange silty sand with occasional-mederate flint, these deposits were encountered 0.32-0.48m deep, except the centre of Trench 1 where they were at a depth of 0.80m (S1).
