Description

Archaeological moinitoring was undertakend at Worlington Quarry to record the stripping of plough soil. The site was adjacent to/north-west of an area that had been cleared in 2014. This report forms an addendum to the earlier works. Prior to the groundworks eight phases of monitoring had been carried out, as well as an evaluation detailed in the 2014 report. The site measured 337m2 and c.0.5m of plough soil had been stripped. No archaeological features or finds were recorded across the site. The soil profiles appeared to be somewhat disturbed by ploughing, with c.0.4m of dark brownish-grey stony silty-sand plough soil overlying up to 0.1m of striated mid grey and orange stony sand, which was interpreted as disturbed subsoil. The geology was pale yellow to mid orange sand with frequent small flints. Several modern topsoil-filled hollows and tree root hollows were also recorded, similar to those seen on previous phases of monitoring across the quarry.
