Description
As part of the Heritage Lottery Fund's Young Roots project, the modern Sunken House at West Stow was recorded to English Heritage Level 3, before being demolished an having its underlying pit excavated. The structure was a replica of a Sunken-Floored building constructed as part of the experiemental phase of works on the site that began in the 1970s. The porfile, fills and finds of the excavation proved markedly different from those recorded in Anglo-Saxon examples. The building recording and excavation was carried out by SACIC, which included the training of a number of volunteers (aged between 10 and 17, who carried out the majority of the recording and excavation work) in excavation and recording skills (S1).
