Description
Archaeological monitoring was carried out on the excavations for replacement storm drains in the Cathedral Precinct Yard. It was hoped that the excavation would be able to provide an opportunity to record the depth of overburden across the precinct yard and record any archaeological features that might be encountered. Where possible trenches were excavated to a depth no more than 600mm below the present ground surface and were designed to be as shallow as possible. Between manholes 2 and 3 the trench was excavated to a depth of 760mm. Manhole 4 was excavated to a depth of over 2m and therefore excavated through soil layers that had not been previously disturbed (S1).
