Description
A total of four visits were made to the site. The first visit was made during the demolition of the existing buildings. The second and third visit was made to inspect an area that was stripped to allow a firm level base for the piling machinery. The fourth visit was made to inspect the area around the northern shaft. This cut 0.75m into the underlying natural subsoil. To the northwest of the northern shaft a narrow (c.0.7m diameter) circular shaft lined with flint and mortar was identified. Labourers on site informed the observing archaeologist of a circular brick lined feature although no trace of this could be seen during the visit (S1).
