Description
A contour survey was carried out on the existing ground surface within the building known as Abbey Hall. The survey was undertaken to determine the current depth of overburden sealing the archaeological layers. A floor will be laid within the building as part of its conversion and the survey data will be used to inform a strategy to project the deposits. The internal and external ground level was surveyed using a total station theodolite. The survey data was processed to produce a model of the ground surface. The works appeared to show that the existing ground levels were made up of modern rubble immediately below the bitumen floor. Beneath this, archaeological deposits including what was thought to be buried footings were uncovered. These footings were thought to be associated with the building in its function as a brew house and bake house (S1).
