Description
Monitoring of soil stripping and two further visits were made to excavate and record as much as possible before its destruction was complete. The quarry is situated on a steepish SW facing hillside (a drop from contour 50m to 42m in c.150m) the site was at the base of this slope. The quarry has been divided up and the gravel extracted by area, this was the sith of the seven areas. Monitoring of area 5 revealed nothing. The initial soil strip removed the topsoil and an underlying layer of possible colluvium (0.3m-1.6m) before re-machining down to a clean gravel. Half of area 6 was already stripped and removed by toothed bucket which meant identifying features was difficult. 20cm bank of charcoal at the base was seen below the colluvium (S1).
