Description

The construction of two houses on the site of the the former Suffolk Hotel garage on High Baxter Street let to an excavation of the street frontage. No formal evaluation of the site could be carried out because it was contained within a standing building and covered by a concrete slab. Two trial engineering test pits which were dug through the concrete were monitored before the work begane, which resulted in the identification of a medieval oven and posthole. The excavation began following the demolition of the Suffolk Hotel garage and concrete slab, which covered the entire site. A mecchanical excavator was used to remove a layer of building debris and disturbed soil. An area c.70sqm was excavated. A strip of ground along the southern edge of the site was left unexcavated to avoid a service trench (S1).
