Description

Excavation was carried out following earlier trial trench evaluation. The site sloped gently to the south-east and lay some 500m to the north west of the nearest naturally occuring source of water. The heavy topsoil encountered lay on top of a 0.2-0.3m layer of clayey silt subsoil resting on Boulder Clay. An area of approx 11x5m (161sqm) was stripped of 0.3m topsoil down to the naturally occuring silty clay subsoil, by mechanical excavator (S1).
