Description
2020: Archaeological monitoring was undertaken of groundworks associated with drainage improvement works on the south and north sides of St Peter's Church, Blaxhall. In total, eight drainage channels, five inspection chambers, and three soakaways (measuring 1.80m in diameter) were excavated during this phase of work. Natural sand geology was revealed at an average depth of 0.80m below present ground level and was overlain by a mix of redeposited natural and cemetery soil backfill averaging 0.60m in thickness. This was sealed in turn by c.0.20m of silty cemetery soil with frequent construction debris inclusions. Late post medieval burials and brick tombs were encountered. Any disturbed human bone was reinterred within the churchyard. (S1)
