Full Description

St George's Church, Shimpling is situated in the centre of the parish and the village. It is reached along an avenue of lime trees. Mostly Decorated, see the E window with an unusual pattern of flowing tracery, the segment-headed S aisle windows, the N window and the arcade inside of low octagonal piers and arches with one chamfer and one hollow chamfer. The chancel S doorway has a frieze of dog-tooth inside, a motif usually earlier than the date of the church. Font, odd, octagonal, probably late C14. Stem has eight attached shafts, bowl shallow with quatrefoils and tracery (S1).
There is a unique Med graffito in Aramiac on the inside wall of the tower. Two churches are recorded at Shimpling in the Domesday survey (S2)(S3). (Also see SPL Misc.) The second church is thought to be in the parish of Alpheton (S4). Relatively isolated, adjoining Shimpling Hall. Note sub- rectangular street plan layout around church.
