Full Description
St James' Church, Nayland is not recorded in the Domesday book. The porch at W end of S aisle was built by Wm Abell in 1525 and has three canopied niches and traceried stone panelling to gable. The doors inside the N porch have remains of linen fold panelling and good carved vine leaf trail. Several brasses. Simple Stuart holy table and below gallery at W end, early C16 screen with four centered arches, having a span of 58ins (S1). The unbuttressed W tower is C14 and so is the chancel with its five-light E window displaying flowing tracery, and the W window of the N aisle with intersected tracery. Arcade of six bays - from shields in the spandrels of the arcade rise shafts which divide the clerestory into pairs of windows (S2).
