Full Description
Tendring Hall (site of). Built 1784 by Sir John Soane (S1) for the Rowley family. House demolished in 1955, was built of white brick, 7 bays, 2 storeys with a pediment, lower wings and a bow to the garden (S2). An earlier house was built by Sir John Williams (d.1743), for in 1764 it is recorded that he `built here a noble seat, which by purchase is now become the property of Admiral Sir William Rowley' (S3). Sir John's `fine seat' here is referred to in 1735 (S4).
