Full Description

November 1992: Assessment excavation in advance of erection of `zonal workshop' located various Rom features & finds. Details & further excavation to follow (S1).
Adjoins (& extension of?) LKH 30.
Jan - Feb 1993: Excavation of area of circa 300 square metres, located mass of features including ditches, from (L?)IA to ESax in date, with (entrance?) gaps and post holes, a substantial well, circa 2.5m deep and three burials of late C1 to mid C2 date. Parts of a possible Roman roundhouse was also identified. The undisturbed Rom ground level was found over about one third of the site. Finds included slag (metalworking?), quern & mill stone fragments, animal bone & pottery. Pottery suggests occupation from late C1-C4 (also see IA & Sax) with a decline in frequency in the late C2 & C3. Metal finds included 10 coins (1 C3, 9 C4), an iron knife, iron & bronze brooches, a bracelet fragment and a fine cosmetic grinder. Three burials comprising an adult male and two subadults were revealed and appear to be related to a fenced enclosure dating from 1st century to mid 2nd century. The adult male and the older of the two subadults shared an unusual non-metric trait of posterior atlas bridging suggesting a possible familial relationship. Together with skeletons found previously in the vicinity (see LKH 114 and ERL 023) they likely all represent a single Roman cemetery. Further details in (S2)(S4).
November 2002: A small excavation measuring 15m x 7m on the northern side of the building, revealed a series of linear ditches and two pits dating to the Roman period, which represent a continuation of the Roman settlement previously identified to the S (S3).
Radiocarbon date of human humerus, SUERC-34273: 20-220CalAD (95.4% probability). (S5)
Radiocarbon date of human femur, SUERC-34275: 120-330CalAD (95.4% probability). (S6)
