Full Description

Church of St Mary. There are no records of Domesday churches in the parish of Shotley, but it is likely to be one of the two churches recorded for the parish of East Bergholt (S3).
Built in C14. Consists of chancel, nave, clerestory, aisles, S porch, low modern tower. Chancel rebuilt in 1745. Details in (S1)(S2).

1992:wathcing brief on the removal of pews from the north aisle for damp proofing work. The following was noted: A probable flint and mortar foundation was apparent first below the present floor level, with an unknown function. Offset septaine foundation level apparent just below floor level. A brick blocking /repair work of possible 19th centaury date was located below the window. A brick? Underpinning of east wall of 18th or 19th Century date (S4).
