Full Description

1997: Desk-based assessment and evaluation revealed that this lind was likely used as meadowlands in the medieval period. Below the surface approx 1.7-2m deep, were layers of brown and black peat, containing occasional lenses of pale grey sand. Natural geology was present at 2.4-3m deep. This suggests that the site could be located on the edge of a palaeochannel of the River Waveney, which has gradually filled with peat deposits. The peaty deposits indicate that the area was very marginal land, probably prone to flooding, until the area was levelled and built up using building rubble, during the last 100-150 years. It is likely that the peat contains evidence for prehistoric activity in the area (S1).
