Full Description

Pest House built 1665 to meet the possible emergency of an outbreak of plague in the town during that year. There appears to be no evidence that the buildings were ever used for their original purpose. The Feoffment continued to appoint men to look after these buildings and their use for small pox cases. Following the introduction of vaccinations in the late 18th century the number of small pox cases went into decline and the buildings were sold after some internal work had been complete in 1845. Originally 2 buildings - only 1 now survives in use as dwelling (S1).

2007: Monitoring of two extensions identified a flint platform probably laid down prior to construction in 1665, in order to raise the building above that of the surrounding water meadows (S2).
