Site Event/Activity record ESF19272 - Monitoring - Holywell Cottage, Boon Close, Bury St Edmunds

Archaeological monitoring during two extensions to Holywell Cottage, Boon Close, Bury St Edmunds, a former Pesthouse, identified a flint platform probably laid down prior to construction in 1665, in order to raise the building above that of the surrounding water meadows. All groundworks were observed as the were excavated. The groundworks for the first extension covered an area of c.78sqm and the second extension c.31sqm. Each monitoring was undertaken in two stages, first the site strip over the footprint of the building which removed topsoil to a depth of c.15cm and secondly the excavation of the footing trenches which were 0.6m wide and generally c.1.2m deep but up to 1.6m deep in places (S1).
