Full Description
Jan 2002: 1st World War training trenches and associated earthworks, full extent unknown. Seen in area of trees east of cemetery (prior to cemetery extension, which took place, levelling all remains in the new cemetery area without adequate record). Probably extends into woods to east and south. Rapidly observed only (S1).
Probably training ground for the 'Northern Army Bombing School' who were stationed in Mildenhall in 1916 (to Jan 1918) where they were instructing various regiments 'in the mode of trenchfighting known as bombing' (Simpson's Almanack retrospects 1916-1919). See parish file for details.
April 2005: area extended to SE after further trenches observed following felling. (Also see GoogleEarth image).
Detailed survey needed. Discussion with Forestry Commission who agreed area to remain unplanted (though scrub regrowth is a problem).
