Full Description
A long section of anti-tank ditch, and associated activity running approx. North to South on the southern half of Westlerton Heath. It can be seen as an earthwork on aerial photographs from 1945. Anti-tank ditches were mainly created by widening and deepening existing watercourses or by digging ditches along field boundaries, and most sections of the feature have associated banks created by the upcast. (S1)
February 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
Assessment of the aerial photographs for this site (S2-S4) indicate that this site does not relate to an anti-tank ditch, rather the earthworks visible in 1945 is a sunken access track to an area of quarrying to the south. This site has been grouped together with another area of quarrying and military activity to the immediate west (WLN 046). See that record for details.
