Full Description

Indistinct linear cropmarks, possibly field systems, but with natural polygon marks also (S1)(S2).
Also IA & Rom.
Linear cropmarks are visible on aerial photographs to the north-west of Carmen's Wood, Butley parish, centred on circa TM37845029. The linear features are orientated from north-west to south-east to roughly north-south and are about 200-230m in length. There are no field boundaries of this configuration marked on historic maps for this area, including the first and second edition Ordnance Survey maps of circa 1884 and 1904, suggesting that if they do represent field boundaries they are probably Medieval in date or older. However, their close association with extensive cropmarks caused by geological frost-crack patterning suggests that they may simply be linear faults in the underlying geological matrix, and not archaeological features. Cropmarks to the south of the field may represent field boundaries that continue in a neighbouring field (see BUT 066).
