Full Description

2007: trial trench evaluation identified a range of features concentrated in the northern part of the site, spanning the Saxo-Norman to late medieval/early post medieval periods. The features comprised small ditches, gullies, pits and postholes, containing sparse finds and are likely to represent backyard activity and property boundaries. One 14th century pit contained a very large assemblage of cattle bone and sheep skulls, and may represent evidence for butchery activity on a larger scale. A moderate quantity of daub was also recovered, suggesting the presence of buildings in the near vicinity of the site. No evidence for the medieval mill was encountered, although the central area of the site was found to be almost entirely truncated by later construction. A palaeoenvironmental assessment found that peat deposits adjacent to the mill channel were relatively shallow, and no waterlogged deposits were encountered (S1).
Footing design amended to avoid damage to underlying archaeology - monitoring followed (results O/S).
Horn core remains from mill-stream? - suggest possible lantern production (see reports? - info from Tony Breen?).
