Monument record RLM 006 - Possible barrow on Hoo Hill

Summary

A broad low mound, about 1 foot high and 22 yards in diameter, possibly a flattened barrow, noted on Hoo Hill after systematic fieldwork in Rendlesham Park. No convincing evidence of a low mound was identified on the aerial photographs and LIDAR imagery consulted. Although it must be noted that Second World War training activity did take place in this area (RLM 069) and earthworks could relate to this.

Full Description

The following were noted after systematic fieldwork in Rendlesham Park:- ... on Hoo Hill a broad low mound, about 1 foot high and 22 yards in diameter, possibly a flattened barrow (S1). 21 November 1977 SW edge of Hoo Hill. Nothing observed - all humps in wood appear natural.

May 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
No convincing evidence of a low mound was identified on the aerial photographs and LIDAR imagery consulted. Although it must be noted that Second World War training activity did take place in this area (RLM 069) and earthworks could relate to this.
