Full Description

Bryers Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a dispersed plan and sits alongside a private track in an isolated location. There has been a partial loss of working buildings with the remaining converted for residential use. (S1-4)

18th C timber framed barn, constructed from re-used timbers dating from the 16-17th C, which most likely originated from an earlier barn at the site. This building has 5 bays and is constructed from an oak frame, using jowel principal posts, tiebeams and long arch braces. Some of the original studwork and weatherboarding is still present, however the original thatch was replaced by a corrugated roof in the 20th C. 2 lean-to sheds were added in the 19th C.

The barn stands in the farmyard of a 16th C Grade 2 listed timber-framed farmhouse and is adjacent to a 17th C stable building and a 19th C granary and cartshed (S5).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
