Full Description

Valley Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular E-plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a public road in an isolated location. There has been a significant loss of working buildings with the remaining converted for residential use.

Farm buildings including a 16th C timber-framed and plastered farmhouse with a crownpost roof; the house was extended in the 17th C. Also present is a 17th C timber-framed and weatherboarded barn on a brick plinth, with a thatched clasped-purlin roof. The barn has 5 bays as well as integral stabling at one end with a hayloft above (S1).

2015: A building recording was undertaken on a barn and stable 30m south of the main farmhouse. The barn has retained its basic form and external appearance as a late 17th century threshing barn. The stable attached to the north end of the barn has been largely unaltered. The barn is a well-preserved example of an East Anglian threshing barn which has retained is steeply pitched thatched roof. Sympathetic renovation works were carried out in 2001 (S2)

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
