Farmstead record RGV 049 - Farmstead: Street Farm

Street Farm lies on the northern side of Redgrave Street. The farmhouse is grade II-listed and dates to the 17th century. The site includes a 19th century brick maltings. At the time of the tithe survey in 1846 the farm was an arable holding of 139 acres. The shed adjoining the farm track to the west of the house is a 19th century stable range which is of considerable historic interest despite its partial collapse. The building dates from circa 1820, with a butt-purlin pantiled roof and primary wall braces which are pegged and tenoned to jowled storey posts. The interior is divided into three, with a central tack room flanked on the north by a stable and on the south by a loose box formed in part by a mid-19th century brick extension. The stable retains a central cross-entry and a hay loft with hay drops at both gables. The ceiling preserves a rare section of original wattle-and-daub between the joists and loft boards to prevent the fall of dust from above, and also some original internal plastework and cobble stones survive. Despite its historic interest as a rare and in some respects unusually well preserved vernacular stable the building probably fails to meet the strict English Heritage criteria for listing in its own right. The 19th C brick shelter-shed to the west of the adjoining yard is of historic significance only insofar as it complements the stable. A historic asset assessment of the farm buildings was carried out prior to their conversion (S1).

Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
