Full Description

Small jar with C4 coins (IPSMG 1930-176). ?Same as listed by OS in PSIA (R1)(R2). Robertson, A 2000 Inventory of Romano-British coin hoards, No 1150 lists the 15 coins in Ipswich Museum, all nummi of the 320s-330s, latest coin around 335. She also drew the two pots said to be associated (Figs 15-16) but speculates that there may be some confusion with the Sutton (SUT 002) hoard, also of this date and said to be in two pots; there is no other evidence to suggest this. However the description and drawing of the larger vessel looks as likely to be 1st as 4th century - this needs checking at the museum - and there must be some doubt whether these pieces, from the collection of Thomas Canham acquired by the museum in 1930, are an associated hoard group or general site finds. The entry in Moore 1948 (R2) identifies another possible hoard, of late Roman (Theodosian) date, recorded in a footnote in Archaeol J 92, 1935, 74 and referring to two hoards of Theodosian bronze coins in Suffolk recorded since 1930 - one is 'Woodbridge', ie BEL 008, the other 'Butley, information from Mr G A Sherwin FSA' - so unfortunately only a verbal record.
C2 coin of Sabina, C1 bow brooch, querns (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s).
Basil Brown records Rom finds investigated by S Page and S E West on (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) in 1950. It was presumed to be a settlement site as scatters occur across most of the northerly part of the field (S1).
Stanley West Ms, 1954, records finds at (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s), presumably relating to single settlement ? for description of finds see (S2).
1986: (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s): Brooch fragment (pierced catchplate), found metal detecting, and two illegible asses. Also ? Rom key and spherical headed pin fragment (S3).
1989: Metal detecting by (see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s) located scatter of coins, brooches, lock, slag, pottery & tweezers (see Sax). Details in (S4) in parish file.
Also BA, IA & Sax.
