Monument record ETT 008 - Church of St Peter

This church is in diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich, archdeaconry of Ipswich, deanery of Hadleigh. Status: rectory (S1).
The structure is: chancel, nave, S porch, W tower. The style of architecture is mostly Decorated but Perpendicular windows have been inserted. In the chancel there is a 3-light E window with flowing tracery of a standard pattern and good 2-light windows in the side walls. There are also plain sedilia in the S wall and a C14 piscina with corner-shaft and good angle buttresses. The nave is Decorated in style. The font is Norman or late C12, of Purbeck marble and in the Early English style. It is a low, square basin and is supported by a large cylindrical pillar in the middle and four smaller ones at the corners. A simple C17 pyramidal cover surmounts it. The Royal Arms of Queen Anne, dated 1758, are hinged to the wall. On the reverse side is the emblem of the Prince of Wales. This set of Royal Arms is unique in the country. The walls of the church are lined with the framing of old box pews dating from C17 onwards. The pulpit is Stuart and originally came from St Mary at the Quay, Ipswich. Two features of the church are the fine examples of three-sided Stuart communion rails and a very early, probably late C17, "Table of Affinity" hanging in the gallery. The W tower is a C13 square, embattled tower of flint with buttresses. The S porch has modern masonry incorporating C14 woodwork to the entrance arch and an incut barge-board above. The S door contains C14 ironwork (S2).
In 1900 the church was restored and the nave roof renewed (S2). Nave fabric Norman, blocked round headed window on N & S walls. The S door is round headed and almost certainly Norman, although it serves a 13th century doorway; the ironwork is also Norman (S3).
