Full Description
Bulley Green Farm is a farmstead visible on the 1st Ed Os map. The farmstead is laid out in a regular full plan with additional detached elements. The farmhouse is detached and set away from the yard. The farmstead sits alongside a private track in an isolated location. There has been a partial loss of working buildings with the remaining converted for residential use. (S3-6)
Group of 17th C agricultural buildings, many of which were rebuilt during the 19th C after a shift from dairying to arable. There are 3 timber-framed and weatherboarded grain barns, each of which have 3 bays and a threshing floor. These were all re-constructed during the 19th C, including the replacement of each of their roofs. Also present is another barn, which appears to have been constructed in 3 separate pahases and is now 6 bays long. There are also a number of stock houses, stables and a cartlodge present within this goroup (S1).
Bulley Hall.
1314 Gilbert de Clare, Earl of Glaucester and Hertford owns.
1409 J. Bottiler owns passing to Cavendish family c1435.
1482 Wentworth family owns, absorbed by Netherhall. (S2)
Recorded as part of the Farmsteads in the Suffolk Countryside Project. This is a purely desk-based study and no site visits were undertaken. These records are not intended to be a definitive assessment of these buildings. Dating reflects their presence at a point in time on historic maps and there is potential for earlier origins to buildings and farmsteads. This project highlights a potential need for a more in depth field study of farmstead to gather more specific age data.
