Monument record WLN 055 - Hethern; Ernethern; Alneton DMV

Deserted Medieval settlement at Hethern, Westleton. Also known as Alneton and Ernethern according to Peter Warner (S1). Cited location said to be TM 466 728 (S1).
Lay on main arterial route into the Medieval trade town of Dunwich, and was dependent on this trade. Declined as Dunwich was abandoned, and by 1463 was in a ruinous state.

It was not possible to positively identify the deserted medieval village described above from the available aerial photographs. However, possible medieval to post-medieval earthwork ditches are visible on aerial photographs on land to the north-east of the area. They are visible only faintly within heathland vegetation and consequently it was difficult to discern the extent of the archaeological features. They have been recorded separately (SHER WLN 070).
