Full Description

Site of Ipswich Union Workhouse. Visible on 1st edition OS map, gone by 2nd edition..

Ipswich Poor Law Union was formed on 9th September 1835 and erected St Peter's Workhouse on Great Whip Street in 1836-7 at a cost of £6585 with capacity for 400 inmates. The layout was was a cruciform design with the entrance on Great Whip Street which contained the board room and receiving wards. Four accomodation wings were situated to the rear radiating from a central octagonal hub, the outer perimeter was of single storey workshops and outbuildings. A chapel and infirmary block was later added to the rear of the site (the east). (S2)
The workhouse seemed to have a short life and was replaced by a new facility in a different location in 1896, The Heath Road Workhouse (or Heathfields Poor Law Institution) (see IPS 606).
