Full Description
excavation identified evidence in the form of ditches and pits of the Iron Age, Roman and Saxon settlement. Post holes were also identified thought to be part of a posthole building, the first so far uncovered on this site (S1).
Assessment of the potential for the analysis and publication of the archaeological finds at RAF Lakenheath (S2).
Part of extensive Roman settlement. Windblown sand? This site produced evidence of activity dating from the Iron Age through to the Early Saxon periods. The western half of the site was particularly well preserved with up to 40cm of a finds rich, dark soil overlying the archaeological features (S5).
2001: Excavation recovered evidence of activity dating form the Iron Age through to the Early Saxon periods. The western half of the site was well preserved with up to 40cm of a finds rich, dark soil overlying archaeological features. This produced coarse and fine ware pottery, animal bone and bronze coins. The soul was homogeneous and the mixed date range of the finds suggest the layer was probably reworked. Beneath the dark soil was a dense network of inter-cutting features including Roman ditches and Roman and Early Saxon pits and buildings. The Roman ditches generally followed a northwest-southeast orientation, suggesting that they were laid out within a well-structured pattern that evolved and endured throughout the Roman period. Two wells and a possible rectangular building based on earth-fast posts indicated in some phases the ditches were dividing domestic plots. Seven burials were excavated across the site belonging to both the early and late periods of occupation (S3).
Included in the Proceedings of the Suffolk Institute of Archaeology and History annual round up of individual finds and discoveries for 2001 (S6).
