Monument record RMA 002 - Bucket urns

Bucket urns found in the commoners' sandpit on the NW corner of Rushmere Heath between the Playford and Woodbridge East roads ((see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)) between circa 1928 and 1938. Six complete or restored urns in Ipswich Museum, in addition the fragmentary remains of at least another six have been seen. An old man who once worked at the pit alleged that many urns had been removed in the late C19 (S1). One urn has finger-tip decoration and an applied shoulder cordon, another has vertically pierced lugs and a panel of incised basket pattern ornamentation (S2). Several cremations without urns also said to have been found (R1). Area said to be extensive.
Beaker sherd with comb-stamped decoration found in overgrown pit ((see 'Not to be published on web' tab for finder/s and/or findspot/s)) 1950 by Mr C Campbell of Martlesham (S3). Old HER card notes an account of an excavation by Campbell in 1958, exists in Ipswich Museum (S4).
