Full Description
Cemetery found digging drainage trench in March 1954. Site excavated by Group Captain Knocker from 30 March to 13 April 1954. Details in (S1). Within outer bailey of Framlingham Castle (see FML 001 and FML 009). Cemetery claimed to be Saxon (S1) but probably medieval. Ipswich ware vessel found in `burial layer' - see (S1).
January-February 2002: Geophysical, cartographic and earthworks survey by English Heritage (S3)(S4).
This cemetery is extremely unlikely to be middle Saxon. The stratigraphy does not support this and none of the middle Saxon finds were clearly associated with the burials. A cemetery here is much more likely to be associated with the castle chapel (possible the original parish church) and is likely to date to the 12th century. (S5)
