Monument record EKE 048 - Site of multi-phase cropmarks, possibly including settlement of Roman date

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks of fragmentary enclosures, possibly relating to Roman settlement and/or activity, and multi-phase field boundaries of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs. The main component of the site would appear to be a group of rectilinear enclosures and fields. The indicated level of subdivision within these enclosures could indicate a specialised activity, such as settlement. A curvilinear trackway and boundaries following a different alignment would suggest more than one phase of activity. The main enclosures and fields could be Roman in date, as indicated by the proximity of Roman finds (EKE Misc/ MSF12308).

Full Description

July 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The cropmarks of fragmentary enclosures, possibly relating to Roman settlement and/or activity, and multi-phase field boundaries of unknown date are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S4). The main component of the site would appear to be a group of rectilinear enclosures and fields. The indicated level of subdivision within these enclosures could indicate a specialised activity, such as settlement. A small possible incomplete ring ditch within this area may relate to a domestic or agricultural structure. A curvilinear trackway and boundaries following a different alignment would suggest more than one phase of activity. The main enclosures and fields could be Roman in date, as indicated by the proximity of Roman finds (EKE Misc/ MSF12308).
