Full Description

Flint and mortar wall identified next to the gate during work on floodlights. The flint and mortar beneath the bricks seem very substantial for a simple wall which raises three immediate possibilites; either there had been a building on this spot which has been demolished or the pavement level has risen or there was a substantial wall across the front. A look at the 'Warren' map of 1740 (?) shows an adjoining property to this spot which does not now exist but it did not extend to the Gate. The second idea does not agree with the structural evidence from the Gate itself which looks to be at its original height. The first option would now seem most likely but it is yet unproved. (S1)
