Full Description
May 2015. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The earthworks of an area of banks and drainage ditches of probable medieval to post medieval date are visible on aerial photographs and LIDAR (S1-S4). The site is located on the river valley floor adjacent to the Roman to Saxon date settlement and presumed Saxon Royal residence (RLM 013). Whilst it is possible that these features represent drainage and/or water meadows, the fact that they are overlain by a bank, presumed to be of at least post medieval date, it remains a possibility that they represent land allotment of medieval or even Saxon date. Not all of the ditches and drains dividing this meadow up have been mapped, only the more substantial components. Also a number of other linears cut across this site, but appeared to relate to twentieth century features, drainage and stock management and were omitted from the mapping.
