Monument record RMS 061 - Cropmarks of circular features of uncertain archaeological date and significance

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks of two circular features of uncertain date and significance are visible on aerial photographs within the wider cropmark complex of RMS 021. Possible interpretations include a pair of Bronze Age round barrows, additional prehistoric or Roman roundhouses associated with RMS 021 or Second World War structures or activity associated with the "civil starfish" and "Civil QL" bombing decoy (RMS 042) at this location.

Full Description

March 2016. Suffolk Coast and Heaths Area of Outstanding Beauty National Mapping Programme.
The cropmarks of two circular features of uncertain date and significance are visible on aerial photographs (S1-S3) within the wider cropmark complex of RMS 021.
The circular marks, 12-14m across, are visible within a sub-rectangular area of darker crop, possibly indicating a sunken area or different geology. The circular areas are visible as lighter/riper areas of crop within this feature, surrounded by a possible ring ditch, giving the site the overall appearance of a Bronze Age round barrow.
However other ring ditches within this area have been interpreted as roundhouses within RMS 021 and this is also a feasible interpretation for these, although it has been suggested that they could equally relate a small group of Bronze Age round barrows underlying the field system. The later siting of a "civil starfish" and "Civil QL" bombing decoy (RMS 042) at this location also introduces the possibility that they relate to Second World War structures or activity not detected on the available 1940s aerial photographs.
