Monument record ADT 095 - Cropmarks of one or more ring ditches of uncertain date, possible Bronze Age round barrow

Please read our .

Summary

The cropmarks of one, possibly two ring ditches of uncertain date are visible on aerial photographs. The possible second incomplete ring ditch is located to the north and is quite indistinct. It is possible that it/they represent the remains of Bronze Age round barrows and the landscape setting – just above the break in slope, overlooking the lower coastal land – would be appropriate for this type of monument. However the site is located within an area of enclosures and fields, some of which may be late prehistoric to Roman and/or medieval in date (ADT 013 & ADT 099) and it is possible that these ring ditches may relate to structures contemporary with part of that site. Although it is also feasible that they relate to landscaping/garden features associated with the grounds of The Old Rectory and The Shrubbery. A ring ditch, albeit a much larger one, has been recorded in this approximately location (ADT 067) from an unspecified CUCAP photograph. It is feasible that it relates to this same site.
