Full Description

Stour Valley Railway line ran between Great Shelford, Cambridgeshire and Marks Tey, Essex. The line opened in sections with the part between Marks Tey and Sudbury opening in 1849 and the section between Sudbury and Haverhill opening in 1865. The route between Sudbury and Shelford closed in March 1967 as part of the Beaching cuts and only the section between Sudbury and Marks Tey remains in use. Banks from the railway remain in sections of the route.

From NRHE record:
The Colchester, Stour Valley, Sudbury and Halstead Railway, (Stour Valley Railway) was incorporated in 1846 to construct a 12-mile long railway from Hythe, South of Colchester, using running powers over the Great Eastern Railway to Marks Tey, then laying a new double track to Sudbury. It included the 1066 ft long Chappel Viaduct, built of 7 million bricks. Branches were also planned to Halstead and Hythe. Only the Hythe branch was constructed as part of the original scheme, opening in 1847, two years before the Stour Valley section.
